My favorite part of this wonderful tour was seeing how everything I learned and saw fit into the stories of the times at The Middleton Plantation- I saw quotes from a letter from a Grimké relative to a Middleton outlining the destruction of the plantation's structures by Union soldiers, and a tour guide told me that the Middletons would have been leaders in expelling the Grimké sisters from Charleston. The title The Invention of Wings was one of the first inspirations that came to Sue Monk Kidd as she began the novel. Carol takes great care of those who walk with her we were nearly always in the shade and had cool drinks as needed to keep us comfortable and energized. I highly recommend this tour, even for those who have not read or learned about these two remarkable sisters, since learning about this family is learning about all families in Revolutionary and Civil War eras.
